Green Computing: Network DesignIf you already have a server, you may be able to use “thin clients”, potentially saving over $400 per year in energy costs, and up to $800 to buy. The thin client shown at right costs around $150, and runs on 3W (yes, no misprint - three watts)!

If you have no server, but four or more computers, then converting at desktop replacement time to a server and thin clients can be cost effective.

And if you have several servers, virtualisation technology can combine different server applications - and even operating systems - onto a single server platform - saving considerable sums in both purchase and operating.

Also, does every computer in your network need Gigabit Ethernet? Running a 24-port Gigabit switch can consume around 48W more than 100 Mbit – even when not transferring data. And the time difference to open a typical 10MB Word file is usually insignificant.

There is also a growing range of power saving features in selected network equipment:

  • Link-down mode
  • Automatic cable length power adjustment
  • Schedule-based power-over-Ethernet
  • Automatic WLAN power off/on
  • Activity timeout disk power-down
  • System temperature fan speed and power control
  • High-efficiency power adaptors
  • Auto power off/on
  • LED lights off/on

Building a network from appropriate products has the potential for significant savings.

Our business has been in operation since 1991, and building low-energy computers since 2002. Our staff have a long-standing commitment to practical environmental improvement, including experience in environmental management consulting.

To ensure your Green Computing solution best supports your business or home needs requires proper analysis of what those needs are: usually not in computing terms, but in terms of what you need to do and how you want to do it. With our system analysis skills, we can help identify opportunities for savings in your network energy budget, your computer purchase budget and your network purchase budget.

Once the opportunities are identified, you need a range of solutions from which to choose (not just one pre-selected by your computer supplier). With our range of experience in client-server systems, low-power computers, custom PC construction and PC optimisation, as well as our considerable experience in network design and construction, and the range of network hardware we supply, we can work with you to identify the system that ensures the lowest TCO (Total Cost of Ownership: a combination of purchase costs, usage and running costs, maintenance upgrade and repair costs and disposal costs).

Few companies can beat our track record in green computing. Our focus on meeting the user's needs, rather than the “IT needs” means that we can deliver a cost-effective solution, as well as help you save the climate.
