 The latest operating systems are mostly aimed at the latest hardware,
and this usually means higher-power (and more expensive) hardware –
compare the minimum recommended hardware for Windows Vista and XP.
But not all tasks require the latest operating systems, and not all operating systems need high-power hardware. For example, a low-energy file- and mail-server system can save up to $1,400 compared to common equivalents and around $210 per year in energy costs.
A system deigned for clerical use can save $800 at purchase, and
around $150 per year in energy costs. Given careful and optimal
management, it will continue to do so for its entire life span
